It started at a kitchen table
Twenty-five years ago, a young teacher with a master's in developmental psychology began tutoring students one-on-one in their homes. He didn't set out to build a company — he just wanted to help the kids who were falling through the cracks. The ones who sat in the back of the classroom, hoping not to be called on. The ones who'd decided they were "just bad at math" or "not a reader." The ones whose parents knew something was off but couldn't find the right help.
What started as a few students grew into a full tutoring practice. Year after year, he worked with hundreds of learners — each with a unique set of strengths, challenges, and ways of understanding the world. And he didn't see these students for a semester and then move on. He guided them through elementary school, into middle school, through the turbulence of high school, and then mentored them through college. He watched firsthand how a child's relationship with learning transforms at each developmental stage — the concrete, hands-on curiosity of early elementary years giving way to the abstract reasoning and identity questions of adolescence, and eventually to the self-directed independence required for college success.
His background in developmental psychology gave him a lens that most tutoring materials lack. He understood that the cognitive leap from elementary to middle school isn't just about harder content — it's about a fundamental reorganization of how the brain processes information. He knew that the middle school drop in academic confidence, especially among girls in math and science, coincides with a developmental window where social comparison intensifies. He recognized that the high school student who seems disengaged isn't lazy — they're navigating the developmental task of identity formation, and workbooks that treat them like larger middle schoolers miss the mark entirely.
And year after year, he refined his materials. He took notes on what clicked. He threw out what didn't. He tested, adjusted, and tested again.
